ASSESSING CONTRACTORS’ SAFETY CULTURE AND KNOWLEDGE

R&C: Could you outline the importance of managing contractor safety when using an outsourced workforce? How has due diligence evolved?

Duhamel: Strategies for implementing contractor safety should be paramount for any organisation using an outsourced workforce. Hiring contracted workers involves additional diligence for employers, especially relating to workers’ health and safety. Employees usually undergo onboarding when they are hired, and receive continuous training, recertification and transparent communication from management. Contractors may be hired and engaged in high-risk work for a week or several years without the same extensive safety and certification training. Today, due diligence has evolved to leverage technology. Using a contractor management platform allows companies to connect with contractors in a more organised and efficient manner. These platforms house training records and certifications and facilitate communication in a way that is easy to track and maintain. By bridging the gap between contracted and employed workers, employers improve their visibility into potential risks, drive alignment across the entire workforce and reduce serious injuries and fatalities (SIFs).
