COMPANY SAFETY CULTURE AND ITS IMPACT ON WORKPLACE SAFETY

R&C: Could you explain how a culture of safety benefits a workplace? What risks face organisations that fail to take health and safety seriously?

Anderson: A company’s safety culture is a collective set of attitudes, values, norms, beliefs and practices its employees and contractors share with respect to workplace safety. Nurturing a strong safety culture is critical to improving risk management and overall safety performance. When it comes to safety, contractors and employees want to be heard. They want to have a voice and a medium to share positive and constructive feedback to the organisations they support, collectively making improvements to strengthen their safety cultures on jobsites. Based on a survey of more than 230 decision makers, a majority of which were director-level or above, almost 70 percent of respondents reported improving safety culture and value alignment as most effective in driving down serious incidents and fatalities. In addition, improving site safety culture was the number one priority identified by respondents looking to meet their contractor management objectives.
