DATA DISCOVERY IN RESPONSE TO DATA PROTECTION AND PRIVACY REGULATION
R&C: Could you outline the role of data protection in a global, interconnected information economy?
Roberts: Today, most businesses recognise that data protection is fundamental to trade, security and privacy. People buy from and work with companies they trust, and protecting their data and respecting their privacy is a crucial part of that. Data protection and privacy legislation has been introduced in 137 countries now, with more on the way, emphasising its importance to the global information economy. The more interconnected we become, the more important it is that there is legislation and mechanisms in place to protect all kinds of sensitive data, but especially personal information.
Cavey: Many businesses today are working in a data-driven environment. So much of how they function is dependent on processing and analysing the data of their customers to understand patterns of behaviour and to tailor products and services to drive engagement. That means organisations are handling more information all the time, and a lot of that is sensitive and personal information. Data protection and privacy legislation is so important to protect individuals and make sure companies are looking after their information responsibly. It comes back to the question of trust; people need to be able to trust businesses to do the right thing and data protection is crucial to that.
