ESTABLISHING GOOD PRACTICES IN MANAGING AI SYSTEMS
The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) recently developed the artificial intelligence management essentials (AIME) tool to provide organisations with practical steps for establishing good practices in managing artificial intelligence (AI) systems.
The effective management of AI systems is crucial for unlocking the benefits of innovative technologies while mitigating risks and potential harms. AIME aims to distil key principles from existing AI regulations, standards and frameworks to offer an accessible starting point for organisations to assess and improve their AI management systems.
The DSIT launched a public consultation which closed on 29 January 2025. This aim of the consultation was to seek feedback on the design, content and utility of AIME to ensure it is fit for purpose and supports businesses in implementing effective AI management processes. The consultation responses will be used to refine AIME, ensure that it is fit for purpose, and supports businesses of different sizes and sectors.
What is AIME?
AIME provides a framework for organisations to assess and improve their AI management processes. It is primarily intended for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and start-ups that encounter barriers when navigating the evolving landscape of AI management standards and frameworks.
For larger organisations, AIME could be used to assess AI management systems for individual business divisions, operational departments or subsidiaries. AIME is not intended to evaluate AI products or services themselves but rather to assess the organisational processes in place to enable responsible development and use of these products.
The DSIT expects the final version of AIME to include three components.
