MANAGING RETURN-TO-WORK LIABILITY RISKS

R&C: Broadly, what key issues do employers need to consider when reopening sites and returning employees to the workplace amid ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns?

Ashley: Before making decisions related to reopening sites, employers first need to recognise that the future ways of working influence decisions on the use of office space. Ensuring physical and psychological safety for all colleagues wherever they are working is critical. Considerations around repurposing space to provide more collaborative spaces and a hybrid working model rather than traditional office space should include the impact on the following. First, the culture and wellbeing of remote working colleagues. Second, interaction, socialising and on-the-job learning. Third, local communities, climate change and transport links. Fourth, the wellbeing and mental health of colleagues and the important role of people management. Fifth, determining which roles and individuals need to be in the office. Finally, productivity and the value of trust coupled with relevant and ethical use of motivational interviewing. Whatever the decision, it will have a key influence on future success and sustainability. Remember: when people and local communities thrive, so too does the organisation and the wider community.
