CCO PROFILE: MATTHEW D’AMBROSIO

R&C: How do you navigate complex regulatory environments and evolving legal frameworks? What guiding principles inform your decision making?

D’Ambrosio: Core values are my compass. Mere compliance is not enough – what is legal today may become tomorrow’s enforcement action as regulators apply existing laws in creative ways to address conduct they find objectionable. To borrow Wayne Gretzky’s famous wisdom, you must “skate to where the puck is going”. Effective risk management means anticipating where the legal and regulatory safe zone will be, not just where it is now. My approach centres on a structured ethical decision-making framework. First, is the action legal? If not, it is a non-starter. Second, does it align with our code of conduct and policies? Companies with strong cultures often set standards that exceed minimum legal requirements. Finally, is it ethical and consistent with our core values? This last question is critical – not only for avoiding formal enforcement, but for navigating the court of public opinion, where social media scrutiny and reputational consequences can be equally consequential.
