STAKEHOLDER COMMUNICATION: THE ROLE OF GENERAL COUNSEL AS CHIEF COMMUNICATOR

The general counsel (GC) of a company has important responsibilities relating to the strategic functions and success of their business. However, now more than ever, it is imperative for GCs to evolve with the ever-changing landscape of business, and take a seat at the table with the C-suite as strategic communicators.

In today’s hyper-transparent, regulation-heavy business environment, it is important for every manager and executive to understand how quick and effective communication guides the way for building and sustaining reputation, trust and long term organisational resilience. As expectations surrounding corporate governance, compliance and social responsibility tighten, GCs are being called on to shape the way companies speak to regulators, shareholders, employees and the general public, especially when the stakes are high.

While there are many different strategies GCs and C-suite executives can take, there are a few key approaches that have proven to be successful.
