NAVIGATING GEOPOLITICAL RISKS

Geopolitical risk has become a practical challenge shaping compliance programmes, supply chains, cyber security strategies and risk management frameworks. As organisations navigate increasing uncertainty driven by trade disputes, sanctions regimes, conflicts, regulatory divergence and technological disruption, compliance leaders are being required to adopt a broader, more integrated view of risk.

Leading organisations are embedding geopolitical considerations into governance, compliance and enterprise risk management (ERM) practices to build resilience and maintain agility in an increasingly complex global environment.

From enterprise risk to compliance priority

For many organisations, geopolitical risk was traditionally viewed through the lens of ERM rather than day-to-day compliance activity. However, recent global disruptions have fundamentally changed that perspective, highlighting how quickly external shocks can affect organisational operations and governance.

“Geopolitical risk should be viewed as a component of the broader ERM programme,” states Matthew D’Ambrosio, a global legal, compliance and risk executive. “Historically, risks of this nature were managed at the enterprise level and rarely cascaded down to the compliance risk assessment.

“That changed following the pandemic. While not a geopolitical risk in the traditional sense, the pandemic demonstrated how rapidly a sweeping global event can move beyond obvious business and supply chain disruption to touch virtually every aspect of a compliance programme. That experience reshaped thinking around enterprise-level risks and their relevance to compliance priorities,” he adds.

This shift toward greater integration is reflected across multinational organisations. Geopolitical developments are increasingly viewed as interconnected forces influencing regulatory requirements, supply chain resilience and market access. As a result, compliance priorities are being shaped through continuous dialogue between business leaders and compliance functions, ensuring geopolitical developments are considered alongside operational and regulatory risks.
