SOCIALLY CONSCIOUS LEADERSHIP

R&C: Could you provide an overview of what it means to lead in a socially conscious manner? What are the aims of socially conscious leadership?

Majumder-Russell: Socially conscious leadership is an umbrella term for a wide range of leadership characteristics. A key characteristic is self-awareness of one’s role and the impact it can have upon society. As a leader this means recognising the interconnectedness of humanity and leading in a way that is authentic and adapting to the needs of the present, while never losing one’s integrity and moral compass. This can mean recognising the benefits of diversity in thought as well as in all the other ways, such as a respect for the environment and principles of justice and fairness. It also means leading by example, whether this is taking conscious steps to enhance the common good or mitigating against the common risks and losses.

Orr: To lead in a socially conscious manner is to see oneself as a global citizen. Socially conscious leaders do not focus on profit maximisation alone, but actively and intentionally take into account the wellbeing of society, the natural environment and all stakeholders, including their employees, customers and communities. A socially conscious leader strives to be a catalyst for change by looking inwards, at their personal values and identities, internally, at their organisations’ culture, operations and governance, and externally, at their organisations’ impacts on society and the environment. Finally, these leaders make innovative decisions that reflect their vision of a more equitable and sustainable world.
